WHY WORRY?
Matthew 6:25 (NIV): "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?"
I grew up in the Church hearing the song, "Why worry when you can pray?" That simple truth resonates deeply. Worrying and praying don’t coexist—they're mutually exclusive. You can do one, but not both. Scripture makes it clear that we can’t simultaneously worry and trust. In fact, many consider worry to be a form of sin because it reveals a lack of trust in God's care.
Jesus spoke powerful words to His disciples in Matthew 6:25 that, if applied, can transform our lives. He said, "Do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear." Some translations say, "Do not be anxious about your life." The Greek word used for "take no thought" translates to "worry" or "anxious." Essentially, Jesus is instructing us to avoid worrying or becoming anxious about our lives.
When we look around at the world and even our own circumstances, it’s easy to fall into worry and fear. But Jesus reminds us not to let these feelings take root. He points to the birds of the air and the lilies of the field, showing how our Heavenly Father cares for them—feeding and clothing them. How much more will He care for us, His beloved children, who are far more valuable than birds or flowers?
Peter echoes this truth in 1 Peter 5:7, urging us to cast all our cares—our worries, anxieties, and fears—on God because He cares for us. The Apostle Paul also encourages us in Philippians 4:6-7, saying, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." And when we do, He promises peace—a peace that will guard our hearts and minds.
Worry is not just a spiritual concern; it’s also a physical one. Medical professionals highlight the devastating effects worry has on our health, which is just another reflection of what Scripture teaches us. Worry doesn’t solve anything. It only steals our peace. We must replace it with trust in our loving Heavenly Father, who cares for us deeply and is always faithful to provide for us.
Let us remember these truths in our everyday lives—Matthew 6:25-34, 1 Peter 5:7, and Philippians 4:6-7—and choose trust over worry.
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your unfailing love and care. Help us to release the spirit of worry and place our trust fully in You. We know that You are more than capable of meeting our needs and granting us Your peace. In Jesus' name, Amen.
