THE NAME OF JESUS
Matthew 1:21 New American Standard Bible
21 She will give birth to a Son; and you shall name Him Jesus, for [a]He will save His people from their sins.”
The old hymn, "All hail the power of Jesus name," is still relevant today. For not only did the Prophets prophesy the birth of Jesus, the place of His birth and the miracle of the God becoming man, but the Angel spoke to Joseph and told him that the Child would be called Jesus, "For He will save His people from their sins." Jesus is His earthly name and Christ is His divine name. In the Hebrew Scriptures He is called Messiah, which means the "Anointed One", and in the Greek Scriptures He is called Christ, which also means the "Anointed One."
The name Jesus means Salvation, and according to one Bible Scholar, that word alludes to safety, deliverance, protection, soundness, wholeness and healing. So the name of Jesus brings all those benefits to bear upon the believer. So we can rightly say that there is power in the name of Jesus. These are benefits we can all claim every day of our lives as we journey through life. The name of Jesus covers everything we need. It reminds me of Psalm 103 where we are told by David not to forget God's benefits toward us. The benefits of forgiveness, healing, redemption from destruction, the loving kindness and tender mercies that attend us, and satisfaction with our daily necessities, so that our youth is renewed like the eagles. In the New Testament we see how the name of Jesus brought healing to many who were sick, demons were expelled by the power of that name, the bound were loosed and those in captivity to Satan were delivered. His name is Jesus and that name still has power today to make a difference in our lives. Matthew 1:21; Mark 16: 17-18 Psalm 103: 1-5; Acts 16; Acts 19.
Father, thank you for the name of Jesus and the power that is in it. May we take full advantage of the benefits the name of Jesus provides, and may we walk in the victory that Jesus has wrought for us in the name of Jesus. Amen.
